Gaussian Blur: Effect, Not Redaction

This tool exists for aesthetics and privacy softening — backgrounds behind text, gentle softening of skin or edges — not for hiding information: research has repeatedly recovered text and plates from blurred images via deconvolution. For anything sensitive, use the pixelator instead, whose block averaging is irreversible. The radius slider maps to how much high-frequency detail is removed; over-blurring text intended to stay readable is the most common over-correction.

Blur Is Not Always Redaction

A light blur hides detail from a casual viewer, but it is not a secure way to remove sensitive information. Text blurred with a small radius can sometimes be reconstructed, and pixelation has been reversed in the past. For account numbers, faces that must stay private or anything legally sensitive, cover the area with a solid opaque block.

Use blur for what it does well: softening a background, hiding a licence plate in a casual photo, or drawing attention to the subject. Paint slightly beyond the edge of the object so no sharp outline remains, and export a new copy so the original stays intact.

How the Blur Is Applied

  1. Load the photo and zoom in if needed to see the areas you want to soften.
  2. Choose the blur radius. Small radii hide fine details like text; larger radii remove recognizable features such as faces.
  3. Brush over the regions to apply the effect. Strokes can be undone while you work.
  4. Download the resulting image. Your source file stays unmodified on disk.

Example: Anonymizing a Screenshot

Blur background text in a product photo
Input: Photo with readable price tags in frame, radius 4
Output: Same photo with the tags no longer readable
A small blur radius is enough to hide small text while keeping the rest of the image perfectly sharp.
Hide a face for a publication
Input: Portrait photo, radius 18 applied to the face
Output: Portrait with the face softly anonymized
Larger radii spread colors over a wide area, which removes identity-level detail — the standard approach for GDPR-conscious publication.

Common Questions

Is blur safe for anonymization?

For most publication purposes yes, especially with large radii. For very sensitive content, pixelation is the more conservative choice because it destroys data deterministically.

Does blur increase file size?

Blurring can slightly increase size because the smoothed gradients are harder for JPEG to encode compactly. The increase is normally under 10%.

Can I blur multiple separate areas?

Yes, the brush mode lets you paint over as many disconnected regions as you need before exporting a single result.
