Crop Before You Resize, and Respect the Subject

Cropping first means the resizer works on fewer pixels and you keep more subject per remaining pixel. The compositional rule of thumb: leave breathing room in the direction the subject faces or moves, and keep eyes on the upper third for portraits. For images destined for fixed slots (avatars, cards), crop to the target ratio — not the target pixels — so the subsequent resize never distorts.

What Cropping Does to the Frame

  1. Load the image you want to crop using drag-and-drop or the file picker.
  2. Drag any corner or edge of the selection box to define the crop area. Input works with mouse, touch, and stylus.
  3. Select an aspect ratio preset (1:1, 4:3, 16:9, 3:2) or leave it on Free to crop without constraints.
  4. Move the selection to frame the composition you want, then export the cropped image locally.

Example: Reframing a Photo

Square crop for a profile picture
Input: 4000×2250 landscape photo, ratio 1:1
Output: 2000×2000 export
Locking 1:1 and centering the selection on the subject produces a square crop ready for avatars and profile photos.
16:9 crop for a video thumbnail
Input: 3000×2000 photo, ratio 16:9
Output: 1920×1080 export
A 16:9 crop keeps the full widescreen framing required by YouTube and other video platforms without introducing black bars.

Common Questions

Does cropping reduce quality?

No. Cropping removes pixels outside the selection; the selected area keeps exactly its original resolution. You can then export it at JPG/WebP quality of your choice.

Why would I crop instead of resize?

Cropping is the right choice when you need a specific aspect ratio (like 1:1 or 16:9). Resizing keeps the whole image but changes its dimensions, which can distort it if the ratio differs.

Can I undo a crop?

Yes, you can drag the selection again before exporting. Once you download, the original file remains intact on your device, so you can always start over.
