Picking the Right Target Format

  • PNG: lossless, keeps transparency, worst for photographs — a photo saved as PNG can be 5–10× the JPG size.
  • JPG: lossy, no transparency, the default for photos; re-saving a JPG repeatedly degrades it, so convert from the original.
  • WebP: usually 25–35% smaller than JPG at equivalent quality, supports transparency and lossless mode — the safest web default today.
  • GIF: only for simple animation; a static image never belongs in GIF — a palette of 256 colors destroys gradients.

JPG, PNG or WebP: Which One to Export

JPG suits photographs: it is small and supported everywhere, but it has no transparency and discards detail every time it is saved. PNG is lossless and handles transparency, which makes it right for logos, screenshots and graphics with sharp edges, at the cost of large files for photos.

WebP covers both cases, with transparency and smaller files than either, and every current browser displays it. Converting a JPG to PNG will not restore lost quality, it only makes the file larger. Convert from the best original you have, and pick the target based on where the file will be used.

What Changes Between Formats

  1. Load the image you want to convert by drag-and-drop or file picker.
  2. Pick the target format: JPG for photos, PNG for transparency and graphics, WebP for the best web compression.
  3. Adjust quality if the target format supports it (JPG and WebP). PNG is always lossless.
  4. Download the converted file and check the new size — WebP is often 50–70% smaller than JPG at similar quality.

Example: PNG to WebP

PNG to WebP for a faster website
Input: 2.1 MB PNG (with transparency)
Output: ~450 KB WebP at quality 80
WebP supports transparency and compresses far better than PNG for photographic content, dramatically improving page load times.
WebP to JPG for a legacy upload form
Input: 800 KB WebP generated by a camera app
Output: ~950 KB JPG at quality 90
Some older systems do not accept WebP. Converting to JPG sacrifices nothing for ordinary photo use and keeps wide compatibility.

Common Questions

Which format should I choose?

Photos → JPG or WebP. Graphics with text or transparency → PNG or WebP. For web delivery, WebP gives the best quality-per-byte in virtually every case.

Is the conversion lossless?

PNG output is lossless. JPG and WebP re-encode with the quality slider you select, so choose 90+ for archival copies.

Does conversion upload my image?

No, everything happens client-side. The image decodes, re-encodes, and downloads entirely inside your browser.
