Tip Calculator

Calculate the tip for any bill at any percentage and split the total evenly between any number of people, with per-person amounts.

Tip amount
19.2
Total with tip
147.2
Per person
36.8

Tip = bill × tip% ÷ 100. Per person = total ÷ people. Calculated locally.

Splitting and Rounding Without Surprises

Per-person math depends on order: tip on the pre-split total and then divide, versus splitting first and tipping each share, differ by cents when the party is uneven — the first is what restaurants expect. Tipping on tax is customary in the US and uncommon in much of Europe; the calculator works from whatever base you enter.

Typical Rates

  • US restaurants: 15% minimum, 18–20% for good service, 20%+ for exceptional.
  • Bars and coffee: $1–2 per drink or round up.
  • Many countries add a service charge to the bill — check before tipping on top.

The Formula Behind the Result

  1. Enter the bill amount and choose or type a tip percentage.
  2. Optionally round the tip up or down to the nearest whole unit.
  3. Enter the number of people to split between — per-person totals update live.
  4. The breakdown shows tip amount, total with tip, and per-person figures.
Formula & Technical Standard
Tip = bill × tip%/100. Per person = (bill + tip)/people.

Worked Example

Dinner for four
Input: Bill 128.00, 15% tip, 4 people
Output: Tip 19.20 · Total 147.20 · 36.80 per person
Splitting computes both the food share and the tip share per person so nobody pays twice.

Common Questions

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Etiquette guides generally suggest tipping on the pre-tax subtotal, though many people simply tip on the total for simplicity.

Can I use any tip percentage?

Yes — presets like 10/15/18/20% are offered, but you can type any value including decimals.
