Gallons Are Not One Unit

The recurring volume trap is the gallon: a US gallon is 3.785 liters, an imperial (UK) gallon is 4.546 — a 20% difference that matters at any fuel pump or recipe crossing the Atlantic. US and imperial fluid ounces also differ (29.57 vs 28.41 ml), so "8 fl oz" means different volumes by country. Cooking adds a second layer: a US cup is 237 ml, but Australian recipes use a 250 ml cup — which is why converted recipes sometimes taste different before anything else is wrong.

How the Conversion Works

  1. Enter a volume and choose the unit — US and imperial (UK) variants are always labeled explicitly.
  2. All other units convert at once, anchored on the liter.
  3. Cooking units (cups, tablespoons, teaspoons) use the standard US definitions.
  4. Comparisons show the value against common containers (soda can, milk jug) for intuition.
Formula & Technical Standard
1 US gal = 3.785411784 L (exact) · 1 imp gal = 4.54609 L (exact) · 1 US cup = 236.5882365 mL.

Conversion Example

Recipe from the US
Input: 2 cups
Output: 473.18 mL ≈ 0.47 L
US cup measures differ from metric; converting keeps baking ratios intact.
Fuel economy comparison
Input: 12 US gallons
Output: 45.43 L
A US gallon is ~17% smaller than the imperial gallon — mixing them up skews fuel calculations noticeably.

Common Questions

Are US and imperial gallons really different?

Yes: 3.785 L vs 4.546 L. They share a name but not a size, which is why this tool always labels which one you are converting.

Which cup is used for recipes?

The US legal cup (236.59 mL) used in American recipes. Metric cups (250 mL) exist in Australia and are listed for completeness.
