YouTube Watch Time Calculator

Work out exactly how many views (or videos) you need to hit the 4,000 public watch hours YouTube requires for monetization, based on your real average view duration.

At 1 uploads/week with current per-video views: ≈ 24 weeks (≈ 5.52 months)
Math: 4,000 h × 3,600 s ÷ 240s average duration = 60,000 views

Views Required for 4,000 Hours at Common View Durations

  • 1:00 average duration → 240,000 views.
  • 2:00 → 120,000 views.

How the Tool Works

  1. Enter your average view duration — the number YouTube Analytics reports for your channel.
  2. The tool converts your 4,000-hour target into the exact number of views required.
  3. Enter your average video length to see how many full videos that represents at your usual retention.
  4. Add your current watch hours to see the remaining gap, and a weekly upload pace to estimate when you reach it.
Formula & Technical Standard
Views needed = target hours × 3600 ÷ average view duration (seconds). Videos needed = views needed ÷ views per video. Remaining hours = 4000 − current hours.

Typical Use

Short-form channel reality check
Input: 2-minute average view duration
Output: ≈ 120,000 views for 4,000 hours
4,000 hours is 240,000 minutes; at 2 minutes watched per view, 120,000 views are required — Shorts-heavy channels usually need far more because retention is shorter.
Long-form channel
Input: 8-minute average view duration, 2,500 views per video
Output: ≈ 30,000 views ≈ 12 videos
Longer watch sessions dramatically reduce the view count needed, which is why tutorials and essays monetize faster.

Common Questions

What are the exact YouTube monetization requirements?

There are two tiers. The early tier (500 subscribers, 3 public uploads in 90 days, plus 3,000 public watch hours in 12 months OR 3M Shorts views in 90 days) unlocks fan funding and memberships. Full ad-revenue sharing requires 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 valid public watch hours in the trailing 12 months, or 10 million valid public Shorts views in the trailing 90 days. This calculator targets the 4,000-hour ad-revenue threshold.

Do Shorts views count toward the 4,000 hours?

Shorts feed views build the separate Shorts threshold (10M in 90 days). Watch hours from Shorts viewed in the feed do not count toward the 4,000-hour requirement; views of your long-form videos do.

Do watch hours expire?

The 4,000 hours is a rolling 365-day window. Hours older than 12 months drop out, so a channel that stops publishing can fall below the threshold even after reaching it once.

Is private or deleted video watch time counted?

No. Only valid public watch hours count. Hours from private, deleted, or removed-for-policy videos are excluded, as are ad-paid (TrueView) campaign views.
