Batch File Rename Preview
Preview exactly how a batch of file names would look after your rename rules — a planning step; nothing is modified or downloaded automatically.
Processed locally in your browser. Your files are not uploaded.
This tool only previews names. It never changes your original files.
Preview Is the Feature — Use It Every Time
Bulk renames are the classic one-click disaster: an off-by-one numbering scheme or a pattern that matches the extension turns 200 files into a recovery project. The preview list exists so that you verify the oldest and newest file alphabetically, plus one in the middle, before committing. Keep extensions out of the pattern, and when numbering, decide whether the first item is 0 or 1 before the rename — both conventions exist and mixing them across folders is why photo sets end up misordered.
Previewing a Rename Safely
Mass renaming is easy to get wrong, and an undo is often not available. A preview shows exactly what each name becomes before you touch a single file, so you can catch duplicates and mistakes early. Check that numbering is padded (001, 002) so files sort correctly, because photo10 sorts before photo2 without padding.
Avoid characters that some systems reject, such as colons, slashes, question marks and trailing dots, and keep names unique within a folder. Apply the pattern on a copy of the folder first if the files matter, and keep the original names in a list in case you need to reverse the change.
How the Tool Processes Your File
- Select multiple files. The tool lists each one with its current name and extension.
- Choose the operations you would apply: add a prefix or suffix, replace text, or change the extension.
- Review the live preview table showing every old name next to its proposed new name.
- This is a planning step: nothing is renamed or downloaded automatically — use the preview to fix the rules, then rename in your own file manager.
Typical Use
Common Questions
Does this tool actually rename my files?
No — and it never touches them. It is a preview tool: it shows the before → after list so you can design the right naming rules, then apply them yourself in Explorer, Finder, or a shell loop.
Why preview instead of renaming directly?
Browsers cannot modify files on disk, and most mass-rename accidents come from applying the wrong pattern to 500 files at once. Seeing the full result first removes that risk entirely.
Which operations can I preview?
Prefix, suffix, text replacement, and extension change — each shown per file in the preview list.
