HEX, RGB and HSL Describe the Same Color Differently

The conversions are exact — #3B82F6, rgb(59, 130, 246) and hsl(217, 91%, 60%) are one color — but each form answers a different question: HEX is compact for copy-paste, RGB maps to what screens physically mix, and HSL answers human questions ("same hue, lighter"). The classic alpha trap: #RRGGBBAA puts alpha last while rgba() lists it separately, and 8-digit hex is still missed by some older tooling. When a color must match a brand guide, convert once and store one canonical form; re-converting rounded values each time accumulates error.

How the Tool Works

  1. Pick a color with the interactive picker, or paste any supported format (HEX, RGB, RGBA, HSL, HSLA, HSV, CMYK).
  2. The tool parses the input and writes every other representation into its own field, updating live as you edit.
  3. Adjust alpha (opacity) to switch between RGB/RGBA and HSL/HSLA variants.
  4. Click any field to copy that exact value for your stylesheet, design tool, or code.

Example Input & Output

Translate a hex brand color for print
Input: #0284c7
Output: rgb(2 132 199) • hsl(199 98% 39%) • cmyk(99% 34% 0% 22%)
Print designers need CMYK, while CSS usually consumes RGB or HSL — one paste produces every format at once.
Tweak an accent color with HSL
Input: rgb(220, 38, 38) → HSL
Output: hsl(0, 72%, 51%)
HSL separates hue, saturation, and lightness, making it trivial to derive lighter or darker variants of a button color.

Common Questions

Is the conversion exact?

HEX/RGB/RGBA/HSL conversions are mathematically exact within the sRGB gamut. CMYK is an approximation because print gamuts differ per device.

How do I copy a value?

Click the value you need and it is copied to the clipboard in its exact format — CSS-ready with the syntax you selected.

Does it work locally?

Everything—picking, parsing, converting—runs in your browser with no network requests.
