Official YouTube Thumbnail Requirements

  • Recommended resolution: 1280×720 px (minimum width: 640 px)
  • Accepted formats: JPG, GIF, PNG
  • Maximum file size: 2 MB
  • Aspect ratio: 16:9

The Platform Sizes That Actually Matter

  • Open Graph / link previews: 1200×630 — the size every major platform crops link cards from.
  • Instagram feed (square): 1080×1080; (portrait): 1080×1350, which gets more screen area.
  • X/Twitter summary card: 1200×628 with safe margins — logos near edges get cropped by card rendering.
  • YouTube thumbnail: 1280×720. Design text for that size; most viewers see it at thumbnail scale, not full width.

Matching Each Platform's Crop

Each network displays images at a fixed shape: roughly 1:1 or 4:5 for feed posts, 9:16 for stories and vertical video covers, and about 16:9 for YouTube thumbnails and link previews. Uploading the wrong ratio means the platform crops for you, often cutting off faces or text.

Keep important content inside a central safe area, since overlays such as the profile photo, play button or caption can cover the edges. Start from the largest original you have, because enlarging a small image makes it soft on high-density screens. Check the preview before posting; a crop that looks fine on a phone may clip text on desktop.

How the Tool Works

  1. Choose your target platform and format from the presets — for example Instagram Post (1080×1080) or TikTok Video (1080×1920).
  2. Upload the photo you want to adapt. The tool applies the exact recommended dimensions automatically.
  3. Adjust the crop window to reframe the image within the preset, then fine-tune with the drag handles.
  4. Download a pixel-perfect copy ready to publish, with the correct resolution for that platform.

Typical Use

Instagram feed post
Input: 4000×3000 photo → preset 1080×1080
Output: 1080×1080 square export
Instagram displays feed posts at 1080×1080. Pre-cropping to the exact size avoids the platform's own compression and keeps your framing.
YouTube banner
Input: 5000×2500 photo → preset 2560×1440
Output: 2560×1440 banner export
The safe-area of a YouTube banner keeps key content centered; the preset matches the required canvas for full coverage.

Common Questions

What are the official YouTube thumbnail requirements?

Recommended resolution is 1280×720 pixels (16:9 aspect ratio, 640px minimum width), in JPG, GIF, or PNG format, with a maximum file size of 2MB. The YouTube Thumbnail preset in this tool targets exactly those dimensions.

Which presets are included?

Instagram (Post, Story, Reel), TikTok (Video, Profile), YouTube (Thumbnail, Banner), X (Post, Banner), Facebook (Post, Cover), LinkedIn (Post, Banner), Pinterest, and Twitch.

Do I need a huge source image?

The source should be at least as large as the target (ideally 2×). The tool downscales losslessly; upscaling small sources produces soft results.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. All cropping and scaling runs in your browser, so unpublished brand assets stay private.
