Video Crop Ratio Calculator

Convert footage between aspect ratios without guessing: enter your source resolution and target ratio and see the exact crop window, safe-area percentages, and what remains visible.

Target aspect ratio
Crop window
607 × 1,080
Frame kept
31.6%
Trimmed per side
656.5 px wide · 0 px tall
Frame is wider than target → crop width to 607 px (full height kept).
Safe area: keep subjects within 656.5 px of the left/right edges and 0 px of top/bottom to guarantee visibility in the crop.

How the Tool Works

  1. Enter your source resolution (for example 1920×1080) and pick or type the target aspect ratio.
  2. The tool computes the largest crop window of the target ratio that fits inside your source frame.
  3. It reports the crop in pixels, the percentage of the frame kept, and the safe margins on each side.
  4. Use the safe-area numbers to position subjects and text so nothing important lands in the cropped zone.
Formula & Technical Standard
Given source W×H and target ratio r = w/h: if W/H > r the crop is (H × r) × H (trim width), otherwise W × (W ÷ r) (trim height).

Typical Use

Landscape to Shorts/Reels
Input: 1920×1080 → 9:16
Output: Crop 607×1080 — keeps 31.6% of the frame
A full-HD landscape frame yields a 607-pixel-wide vertical window; two-thirds of the width is cropped, so reframe the subject before filming when possible.
Landscape to square
Input: 1920×1080 → 1:1
Output: Crop 1080×1080 — keeps 56.3%
The square crop keeps full height and trims 420 pixels on each side, the standard conversion for feed posts.

Common Questions

Should I crop 16:9 footage to 9:16 or reframe it?

Cropping is lossy: from 1920×1080 you keep only a 607×1080 slice. If the edit allows, reframe (reposition the crop) per shot; if not, plan vertical captures with the subject centered. This tool gives you the exact numbers to plan either way.

What aspect ratio do YouTube Shorts, Reels, and TikTok use?

All three use 9:16. Recommended uploads are 1080×1920. The calculator also handles letterboxing targets like 4:5 (Instagram portrait) and 1:1.

Is cropping the same as scaling?

No. Cropping removes pixels to change the shape; scaling resamples the remaining image. Cropping 1920×1080 to 607×1080 then scaling to 1080×1920 for a Shorts upload is the usual two-step pipeline, and this tool computes the first step exactly.
