SRT and VTT Converter

Convert subtitle timing files between SRT and WebVTT while preserving cues and text.

The Small Differences That Break Players

SRT and VTT timestamps share HH:MM:SS,mmm shape but differ in the milliseconds separator (comma vs period) and in the cue-number lines VTT requires (WEBVTT header) and SRT rejects. VTT also supports styling and positioning that SRT has no way to express — converting a styled VTT to SRT drops those cues silently. If a converted file shows the text but every cue at 00:00, the timestamps failed to parse: nine times out of ten it is the separator.

What Differs Between SRT and WebVTT

The two subtitle formats look alike, yet there are two details that break playback when ignored. SRT writes timestamps with a comma before the milliseconds (00:01:02,500) while WebVTT uses a period (00:01:02.500), and a WebVTT file must begin with the line WEBVTT.

WebVTT also supports positioning and styling, which SRT lacks. HTML5 video players require WebVTT in the track element, while many desktop players and editors prefer SRT. If subtitles drift out of sync, the cause is rarely the format; check the frame rate of the video the file was created for.

How the Tool Works

  1. Paste SRT or VTT subtitle content, or load a .srt/.vtt file from your device.
  2. Choose the target format. The converter adds the required WEBVTT header and timestamp formatting when producing VTT.
  3. Each cue block (sequence number, timing line, text) is parsed and validated — malformed blocks are reported by number.
  4. Download the converted file ready for your video editor or platform.

Typical Use

SRT to WebVTT for HTML5 video
Input: 1 00:00:01,000 --> 00:00:04,000 Hello world
Output: WEBVTT 00:00:01.000 --> 00:00:04.000 Hello world
WebVTT replaces the comma in milliseconds with a dot and requires the WEBVTT header. The converter handles both differences automatically.
VTT to SRT for a legacy player
Input: WEBVTT 00:00:02.500 --> 00:00:05.000 Hola
Output: 1 00:00:02,500 --> 00:00:05,000 Hola
Some editors and players still prefer SRT. Converting back restores sequence numbers and comma timing.

Common Questions

Are cue positions and styling kept?

Basic cue text is preserved. VTT-only styling (classes, voice tags, positioning) is simplified when converting to SRT since SRT has no equivalent.

Do timestamps need to be exact?

Standard forms (HH:MM:SS,mmm for SRT and HH:MM:SS.mmm for VTT) are expected. The converter normalizes any minor formatting differences it can safely interpret.

Is the content uploaded?

No. Conversion runs completely in your browser, which is important when handling unreleased video content.
