Counts update live on every keystroke. Nothing is sent anywhere.

What Counts as a Line Depends on the Last One

The ambiguous case is a file ending with a newline: POSIX counts the lines before it, and whether the trailing empty string is a "line" differs between tools. Word processors that soft-wrap a long paragraph also complicate it — this tool counts hard line breaks (the Enter key), which is the number that matches file line counts in editors and log parsers.

How the Transformation Works

  1. Type or paste text — statistics update on every keystroke, with no button to press.
  2. Words are counted on whitespace boundaries; sentences on sentence-ending punctuation.
  3. Reading time assumes 200 words per minute, the standard average for adult readers.
  4. Use it for tweet limits, meta description lengths, essay requirements, or ad copy budgets.
Formula & Technical Standard
Reading time (minutes) = total words / 200 wpm.

Example Input & Output

Meta description check
Input: A 158-character product description
Output: 158 characters — within the ~160 limit
Google truncates meta descriptions around 155–160 characters, so counting them before publishing avoids cut-offs.
Reading time for an article
Input: 1,240 words
Output: ≈ 6 minute read
Displaying reading time is a standard UX pattern on blogs and documentation sites.

Common Questions

How is a word defined?

Any maximal sequence of non-whitespace characters. Punctuation attached to a word counts as part of it.

Is 200 wpm accurate for everyone?

It is the widely used average for silent reading of English prose. Technical content reads slower; skimming is faster.
